This was a fun film to review and good to know it has its fans!

Sean Gill:

I couldn't agree more. Thanks for the kind words. In a weird way, the film is a guilty pleasure as it is tries so hard to offend in many ways but is still very funny.

The Film Connoisseur:

Agreed on the bleak, nihilism of this film. It is unrepentant in that respect. They sure don't make films like this anymore... at least not by major studios. I also like that Black enjoys creating flawed characters that succeed despite insurmountable odds stacked against them. I sure hope you get a chance to re-watch it again. I was surprised by how well it has aged over the years. It still holds up.

Jeremy:

Thanks for stopping by and for the awesome comments. I totally agree with you about how the film comments on action film conventions and even makes fun of them. It is hyper aware of them and manages to subvert and fulfill them at the same time. Quite an accomplishment!

Thomas Pluck:

I hope he does, too. I think he will. I think (hope) he will nail IRON MAN 3 and that will open some doors for him to do something more personal. We shall see.

Brent Allard:

Thanks! It was a great role for Willis, wasn't it? I too am a fan of Black's. I even dig THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT, which kinda got slammed when it first came out. Even I wasn't crazy about it initially but I've warmed up to it over the years.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08164105442273577128noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5407391624985829089.post-48900080187374713452012-09-30T00:47:29.749-04:002012-09-30T00:47:29.749-04:00great look at a great action film. Hopefully Iron Man 3 will be a boost for him!INDBrenthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11606473452389713844noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5407391624985829089.post-87828503252780882192012-09-29T15:36:33.590-04:002012-09-29T15:36:33.590-04:00I read (and write) books like this story. It's a down and dirty tale like the old pulps and the great detective novels you mentioned.
I hope Shane Black rises again. A perfect intro in the dark, cynical, misgonstic, nasty world of The Last Boy Scout. This is an action movie where the hero rescues his wife and says, “Fuck you, Sarah…You’re a lying bitch and if the cops weren’t here, I’d split your face" and it's treated as a romantic embrace! Bruce Willis is basically John McClane turned up to 11. He's got a permanant hangover, crazy 5 o'clock shadow, and always looks a mess. It's a film that's totally self-aware of it's action movie genre tropes, mocks them openly("This is the 90s, you can't just hit a guy in the face, you gotta say something cool, too. Like hit a guy with a surfboard and say, "Surf's up, pal!"), while still endulging in plenty of gunfights, banter, women only as eye candy or liars, chase scenes, and lots and LOTS of funny banter. The scene with the eloquent hitman is a particular favorite.

"Jake attacks his job with a certain EXBURERANCE!"
"Shit...we're getting beat up by the inventor of Scrabble!"

And personally, I've lived my whole life getting ready to fight Satan Claws. He's out there, getting stronger, and you gotta be prepared, son. That's my motto.Jeremyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12219137212221355997noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5407391624985829089.post-59033237033585521712012-09-28T15:40:28.786-04:002012-09-28T15:40:28.786-04:00Awesome review! I love the bleakness of it, which is also what I enjoyed about Lethal Weapon, you just feel this nihilism, this sarcasm, this anarchy in both films...I love that about it. It's a mirror image of how people felt in the 80's, I just wish more movies were like this nowadays, with some edge and anger to them. NOTHING is like this anymore...everything is so squeaky clean and politically correct it makes me sick. I like imperfect angry characters like the ones portrayed here and in other Shane Black movies. It only makes me wonder what he'll do with Iron Man, something tells me this one will be bleaker somehow...I hope it has some of that Shane Black acid humor I love so much.

The Last Boyscout I haven't seen damn, since the nineties....when it first came out. I do remember LOVING the hell out of this chase sequence that takes place as it is raining like a lot of this film, it seems it's always raining on this one. Gotta give it a re-watch soon! Sort of an ideal Saturday night movie best seen with friends and washed down with cold beers. Very nice writeup, J.D.! As you've stated, Scott could really showcase a beautiful woman. Well done.le0pard13https://www.blogger.com/profile/09421175808461787862noreply@blogger.com
