I guess part of my posting that was to say that Penn would have heard the song in early or mid-'82, before it was even officially released, rather than in '83.Ned Merrillhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15436251586131278302noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5407391624985829089.post-21860588127561418232011-05-31T15:28:07.109-04:002011-05-31T15:28:07.109-04:00Brent:

And yes, Mortensen was so good in THE INDIAN RUNNER. As you say, it hinted at greater performances to come. He has an innate ability to disappear into a role so completely.

Ned Merrill:

Thanks for stopping by.

I'm glad you mentioned Kelly's book. I got most of my production info from that book and I can't recommend it highly enough to anyone who is a fan of Penn's work. Fantastic book.

Thanks for that additional production info. It is really fascinating how far back Penn had an inkling for this film and then over years carefully cultivated it, bided his time until the stars aligned.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08164105442273577128noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5407391624985829089.post-78805867207990561312011-05-27T11:45:42.751-04:002011-05-27T11:45:42.751-04:00Fantastic work as usual, J.D.
The story of the ...Fantastic work as usual, J.D.

The story of the genesis of this project is detailed in Richard Kelly's biography of Penn...Penn was involved with Springsteen's younger sister, Pam, his co-star from FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH. Things were serious enough that Penn proposed marriage to her while he filmed BAD BOYS in Chicago in early '82. She lived with Joyce Hyser (the Boss' girlfriend at the time) in an apartment in Hollywood and Penn, naturally, spent a lot of time there. One night, they listened to an early demo of NEBRASKA that Bruce had sent over and Penn decided he had to make a movie of "Highway Patrolman," so after several beers, he had them get Bruce on the phone and he laid out his plan for a filmed version of the song to which Bruce gave his OK.

So, in fact, Penn heard the song before it was officially released, in the company of the songwriter's girlfriend and sister.Ned Merrillhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15436251586131278302noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5407391624985829089.post-59867656204341586672011-05-26T16:46:26.789-04:002011-05-26T16:46:26.789-04:00fantastic write up. One thing you have to give Penn, he always chooses dark and complex material and doesn't back away from big questions, even if they don't have an answer. He has a great affinity for dark Springsteen, as seen here and also notably using the track "Missing" in "The Crossing Guard" It later came out on the Rising, in what I think of as an inferior version. I'd be willing to bet Penn has worn out a copy or two of "Nebraska." and it's great to see that passion and understanding on screen. Great film also, and a sign of greater things from Mortensen, who I suspect still has some great things ahead.INDBrenthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11606473452389713844noreply@blogger.com
