I agree with you assessment of how he was treated in the film. We get only the broad strokes, which I guess, can't be helped considering the constraints of the running time. As you said, I thought that Jeffrey Dean Morgan did as much as he humanly could with role and did a damn fine job.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08164105442273577128noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5407391624985829089.post-16915512998826539452011-07-26T17:39:43.293-04:002011-07-26T17:39:43.293-04:00The book is one of my favorite books of all time a...The book is one of my favorite books of all time and my favorite character, oddly enough, was The Comedian.

He managed to be ever-present, even though he was dead 99.9% of the time, and he was just so three dimensional and deep in the book (and spread out) that he was truly memorable.

The movie shot it's Comedian wad too quickly. The actor playing him was cast perfectly and made sure to present a bad person but who has layers. But it all got summed up in one ten minute sequence and was barely dispersed at all throughout the film. Bummer. The Comedian's 'logo' is on the cover of the book and on the face of Mars for a reason!Willhttp://paxtonconfiguration.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5407391624985829089.post-51491179713526386382011-07-18T09:14:16.022-04:002011-07-18T09:14:16.022-04:00Dan O.:

I just didn't feel like he understood it all that well.

The Sci-Fi Fanatic:

You bring an interesting perspective not having read the graphic novel so I can appreciate you enjoying the film more than I did. When you live with something that close for that many years you get hypercritical of any film version and Snyder's take was under so much scrutiny that it would have to have been near perfect to satisfy.

There is a lot I like about the film and writing this review helped me come to grips with the things I didn't like about it.

The Director's Cut is good but the Ultimate Cut is better if only for the integration of THE TALES OF THE BLACK FREIGHTER stuff but it's not a vast difference unless you know the source material.

As for comparing to other super hero films... I enjoyed IRON MAN more but WATCHMEN is certainly more ambitious but Nolan's BATMAN film easily trump this one.

As always, thanks for stopping by and for you kind words, my friend.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08164105442273577128noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5407391624985829089.post-32285864794449613082011-07-16T19:30:41.564-04:002011-07-16T19:30:41.564-04:00J.D.

It was far superior for me than the immensely popular Iron Man films. They were okay. Watchmen was much more my taste.

As I mentioned, a great review.SFFhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04256589316922398158noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5407391624985829089.post-61882343814548682222011-07-16T19:23:31.577-04:002011-07-16T19:23:31.577-04:00J.D.

I just recently watced the film.

I think you present a fantastic dissection of all of the things I did LOVE about the film.

Admittedly, I have not read the graphic novel, so either this is a disadvantage or an advantage for me. I'd like to think it may be more advantageous to me.

Having said that, I really like the film alot, but did see some issues with it and would be hesitant to recommend the film entirely.

It's one of those films that I enjoyed a great deal personally and there are friends that I trust I could urge them to see it with caution. It's not The Dark Knight, but it's a dark film like The Dark Knight and I did like its ambitious storyline [which I'm sure is the graphic novel].

The performances were terrific. The least impressive to me was the one you mentioned- Goode. I liked the actress enough that she had my attention. She was also extremely hot, but I did not have the source material to compare her against.

I thought Haley was amazing. He definitely was the most impressive.

Anyway, I read your post yesterday and did not have time to comment on all of the wonderful thoughts you presented about the film here.

Maybe we are on the same page mostly about the film. I may have liked it a touch more than you, but it is a touch disjointed with some incredible sequences that this Snyder can only deliver.

Anyway, having seen it and enjoying its grand science fiction and super hero themes, I can say that I would enjoy seeing it again.

I actually saw The Director's Cut. Would the Ultimate Cut be that much better or minimal?

I also enjoyed all of your extensive back story on the film's production. I did not research it and knew none of it so it made for enjoyable reading to kick off your insightful take on the film.

To quote Roger Ebert J.D. - "Thumbs up" on your assessment.

Best,
sffSFFhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04256589316922398158noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5407391624985829089.post-55917902740293142102011-07-16T02:23:58.546-04:002011-07-16T02:23:58.546-04:00The graphic novel is better but to be honest, this...The graphic novel is better but to be honest, this one had me held over for the most part. I liked the action and the dark style Snyder brought to this material although I do think he could have cut it down on a lot of the random slow-mo shots. Thank you for the fantastic comments! ...le0pard13:

Thank you for the fantastic comments! I really appreciate it. As for which version to watch - stay away from the theatrical cut. If you don't have a lot of time on your hand, stick with the Director's Cut but the most complete version is, of course, the Ultimate Cut which is what I would recommend - if you've got 3 1/2 hours to kill.

I didn't really care for the motion comic as it really just felt to me like the original comic book with some crude animation. I'll stick to the old school source material.

I'd be curious to read your thoughts on this film.

Snackules:

Hah. Good quote. I've read that also. Yeah, Gilliam wisely backed off but the mind still boggles at what he would've done.

christian:

Thank you! Yeah, Haley was awesome. Now I want to watch this one again to look back at what you've analyzed here. I've seen the Theatrical Cut (naturally, when it first came out), and I still have the DC waiting in the old video library. What do you recommend? DC or UC?

I'm curious, still you ever view Watchmen: The Complete Motion Comic? I really enjoyed this digital version of the graphic novel. Actor Tom Stechschulte performed all of the voices (he's also a talented audiobook narrator). This one is the book -- no alterations except for putting the panels into motion (and taking out.

I can see you put a lot of your admiration of the material into this and it's paid off, my friend. I'd say it's the best look at Snyder's film and the seminal Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons creation I've read. Bravo!le0pard13https://www.blogger.com/profile/09421175808461787862noreply@blogger.com
