I agree with you about the film'...Brent Allard:

I agree with you about the film's ambitions and the ability to shock its fanbase. At the time I saw it as a kid I didn't understand the who concept of replacing the old toy line with the new and took Prime's death personally. But now I can see why they did it.

The Film Connoisseur:

Ah, to each their own, I suppose. I will cop to enjoying it for nostalgia value but I really couldn't defend it in terms of quality.

Alto, I think it's harsh to say that it is merely a long ep. of the TV series. What makes it stand out from the show is the scope and scale - i.e. how they expanded the Transformers universe and how much more was at stake. Classic characters were quickly killed off and they dispensed with a major character! That, to me, is what separates it from the show.

For me, the G.I. JOE animated film has not aged well and I prefer the first season of the TV series that had been broken up into two miniseries.

Bubbawheat:

We are in agreement! As I said above, the G.I. JOE animated film has not aged as well as the TRANSFORMERS one but that is a matter of personal preference.

Thanks for stopping by!

thevoid99:

"Whenever I hear "The Touch", I think of 2 things. That movie and John C. Reilly dancing."

Me too! So cool to see PTA paying tribute to the TRANSFORMERS in a roundabout way.

The Sci-Fi Fanatic:

I certanily understand your sentiments on this one, my friend. This film certainly has its share of detractors and is probably more of a cult film now than anything else.

And I can see how you would feel that way if you experienced Japanese anime first! My only exposure prior to the TRANSFORMERS was STAR BLAZERS and BATTLE OF THE PLANET, both of which I loved dearly.

I did like TRANSFORMERS TV series but that was probably due in large part to owning several of the toys so they became inextricably linked in my mind.

But it sounds like you didn't buy into the whole concept of it all which is cool. After seeing the first Bay TRANSFORMERS film I have zero desire to see the 2 sequels. He just ruined it for me as a fan of the original series/toys. But again, I am looking at the animated film through the prism of nostalgia so there's that as well.

Great comments! I appreciate and value your opinion, my friend.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08164105442273577128noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5407391624985829089.post-60276219310283973882012-06-04T10:43:54.553-04:002012-06-04T10:43:54.553-04:00I'm not really sure what happened to me when t...I'm not really sure what happened to me when this one arrived but I couldn't buy it.

I missed The Transformers boat my friend.
I don't mean to deride any of the enjoyment fans take from this series, but I just found the whole thing to be weak.

I grew up on Gatchaman and some of the coolest mech ever designed.

So when the Autobots arrived and turned into a truck... really a truck? I was a little off put. And The Decepticons? That may ranks as one of the silliest of evil names.

I also never loved the animation, which you readily acknowledge as a weak point. But I thought the animation sucked back in 1986. It ranked up there with The Smurfs. That's never good. It just never drew me in, but again I must have missed the moment. I never could suspend my disbelief with the series.

You hit on something telling in the third to last paragraph and one of the reasons I truly disliked this cartoon creation. It was too closely tied with toys, almost by design it felt intentionally created to be a toy and with Hasbro at the helm, it felt manipulative. Still, like I said I could never look passed it or suspend my skepticism.

Anyway, Starblazers animation is incredibly dated today, but the story is good, in much the same way you enjoyed the story here.

So never got the cartoon, never thought much of the Marvel comic. No interest in toys here. When I learned there was a Michael Bay film I didn't care in the least. I saw it and was left cold. The second one was awful. Yet, I'm still intrigued to see that third one. Go figure.

All in all, just not a Transformer guy, but I loved your nostalgic look at it and your reviews of animation, sci-fi and the superhero genres are always terrific. Great stuff JD.

I often enjoy these vintage type reviews over today's new stuff anyway.SFFhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04256589316922398158noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5407391624985829089.post-41504937060854853232012-06-01T19:08:10.484-04:002012-06-01T19:08:10.484-04:00I do enjoy this film. Joe: The Movie. And then when I was in college I rewatched both of them back to back, and this one held on to its charm and nostalgia factor while the G.I. Joe movie was just horribly bad with a few remembered highlights.Bubbawheathttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18258094863868303774noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5407391624985829089.post-43662071111798298392012-06-01T16:47:01.865-04:002012-06-01T16:47:01.865-04:00I have to say that I'm with the critics on thi...I have to say that I'm with the critics on this one. I re-watched it a while back and just couldnt take it, even with all the nostalgia I have for the old cartoons, the animation wasn't so good, especially for an animated film. And that always rubs me the wrong way.

I mean, it felt in a way like a long episode with nothing really special to it in terms of animation; you'd expect that since its a film, it would be better somehow?

I just couldnt take the movie for some reason, it felt cheap, I just thought "this movie really blows!" But I get why I was blown away by it as a kid, it was the freaking Transformers we're talking about here, these toys and cartoons where so hot back in the 80's. Along with Voltron, and G.I. Joe, these franchises took over kids imagination.

I prefer the G.I. Joe animated film over this one any day of the week, it had slightly better animation to it and the story was pffff, way cooler.Franco Macabrohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10994905312221715861noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5407391624985829089.post-51958907160184699762012-06-01T14:15:55.428-04:002012-06-01T14:15:55.428-04:00I remember this well. Trying to replace Optimus Prime was a bold move. I'm not sure they pulled it off but nevertheless it was quite a cinematic moment and the film was quite shocking and ambitious.INDBrenthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11606473452389713844noreply@blogger.com
