I also really enjoyed the you-are-there camerawork during the boxing scenes -- some of the best since RAGING BULL. Always good to see another fan of this film!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08164105442273577128noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5407391624985829089.post-88561698459100235142009-07-05T08:44:08.722-04:002009-07-05T08:44:08.722-04:00Great film, again!

I agree that it would have been interesting to see what Spike Lee would have done with the material. It probably would have been even more political but you're right, I don't think he would have done the boxing scenes the same kind of justice as Mann did.

At any rate, ALI is a fascinating film and certainly a unique take on the man.

Keith:

Yeah, this film certainly did divide people... as a good film should. I'm glad you liked it. I think it is very underrated and pull it out and watch it every so often.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08164105442273577128noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5407391624985829089.post-74382565866847777662009-06-28T23:41:59.023-04:002009-06-28T23:41:59.023-04:00I enjoyed this film. It might be worth a watch again.Keithhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14832710800680256206noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5407391624985829089.post-11231050946205227612009-06-28T21:15:57.339-04:002009-06-28T21:15:57.339-04:00While this isn't one of Mann's best films-...While this isn't one of Mann's best films- though like you said, much of it is due to the subject matter being so well known- it is definitely Smith's best work, and he did a great job.

Part of me wonders what Spike Lee would have done, since I found Malcolm X more compelling. On the other hand, the boxing scenes wouldn't have been as good. I think most viewers concentrated too much on Voight's portrayal of Cosell, which due to the man's much-mimicked voice, became difficult to take seriously.

It'll be the definitive biopic, and I need to watch it after When We Were Kings sometime.Thomas Pluckhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17008022962076648740noreply@blogger.com
