I had never thought of it that way before but it makes perfect sense once you think about it.

And I agree, that if you're willing to go on this trip with Nicholas that the ending is very satisfying because you really feel like you've been on a journey with this character.

I think that the only reason THE GAME hasn't been give the deluxe DVD treatment is that it has swapped owners a few times. I'm glad that my two posts could help/inspire you to write this great piece.

I remember a review of this in EW, I think it was the year end review. The reviewer (it wasn't Owen) said that at the end, he was ready to cry because he felt he had been through it all along with Nicholas. I felt the same way. And so it is a personal decision on how far you'll let this movie take you, but to me, that's the genius of the movie. You play a game and you can start or stop it whenever you want. It's the same way as a viewer. I played the entire thing and loved every moment of it.

I've said this before and I'll say it again. The film begs. IT BEGS for a special edition of it. As Criterion crazy as Fincher is, I can't believe he hasn't re-released it under the label. We can only hope for a better edition in Blu-Ray.PIPERhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13054305230216613759noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5407391624985829089.post-38372696982278183982009-10-06T14:22:16.385-04:002009-10-06T14:22:16.385-04:00It is high time I buy a regionless DVD player.

He talks about how Douglas' character is literally led through the entire movie by all the characters, and only at the end does he take matters into his own hands.Mark Salisburyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07552368976392500597noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5407391624985829089.post-85985248534992196402009-09-29T09:53:25.769-04:002009-09-29T09:53:25.769-04:00Cal:

Well, she is only helping him out because she is part of the game and there are hints of a possible romance but Fincher wisely reins that in and only hints at potential romance at the very end.

At any rate, thanks for stopping by.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08164105442273577128noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5407391624985829089.post-2939323120588038112009-09-28T21:24:18.126-04:002009-09-28T21:24:18.126-04:00Very interesting stuff about the long-winded produ...Very interesting stuff about the long-winded production.

It actually doesn't surprise me, because as the film progressed it seemed to run out of ideas. The concept was interesting but the relationship between Douglas and Unger, and their eventual co-operation, felt really unoriginal and formulaic.

It was downhill from there for me.Calum Reedhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05410595002533524268noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5407391624985829089.post-32427594307816661132009-09-22T16:35:51.125-04:002009-09-22T16:35:51.125-04:00Tommy Salami:

I hear what you're saying about not always being able to identify with the super rich in films but I think the screenplay goes a long way in trying get you to empathize with Douglas' character and trying to show what motivates him and how his father's death haunts him. The film is a lot deeper than people give it credit and you're right about it being underrated.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08164105442273577128noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5407391624985829089.post-80085529515925069932009-09-22T10:43:17.502-04:002009-09-22T10:43:17.502-04:00I watched this film once, a few weeks after my fat...I watched this film once, a few weeks after my father committed suicide. A friend took me to a movie to cheer me up :)

I still appreciated the movie, and liked Fincher after seeing Seven, so it was still enjoyable. I always have difficulty empathizing with the super rich in films, but Van Orton's sense of destiny, walking in the footsteps of his father, struck me deeply. It's an odd thing, when you lose your father, you get the idea that you won't live longer than he did, and that your destiny is the same. The story actually makes him act this out to show the folly of it, which I have learned to understand. It's probably Fincher's most underrated film.Thomas Pluckhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17008022962076648740noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5407391624985829089.post-56082280682467573752009-09-22T09:35:31.064-04:002009-09-22T09:35:31.064-04:00le0pard13:

I don't recall where I read it, but someone said that after his brother lays the truth about CRS to Douglas, Fincher shows Penn (in the background of a scene) cracking up in a car's sideview mirror as a clue to the audience. I don't recall where, but someone published an interesting reading of the film positing that Sean Penn's gift to Michael Douglas was really an intervention, as Douglas was starting to contemplate suicide with the age of their dad's suicide being the essential marker that implies this to be the case.Tony Dayoubhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04632329277519635858noreply@blogger.com
