It really tapped into the birth of hip hop and the culture that surrounded it in an exciting way that other like-minded movies at the time did not.J.D.https://www.blogger.com/profile/11823190634186509982noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5407391624985829089.post-23652107404601844842021-08-29T18:25:53.465-04:002021-08-29T18:25:53.465-04:00This is the Reagan-era junk that now timeless clas...This is the Reagan-era junk that now timeless classics like "Saturday Night Fever" and "Fame" spawned, regardless of it's ethnicities. It was pure imitation cash-in, down to the amalgamation of "Ramos" being both Bobby C. in "Fever" and "Raul Garcia" in "Fame", remixed and revised down to naught. The two previous milestone blockbuster Oscar-awarded films had something
very special and very powerful: a truly brilliant young actor in both roles. And David Picker, the producer of "Beat Street", who was on the set of "Fame" in 1980, knew it, and said so after his BS (ha!) bombed at the box office.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5407391624985829089.post-46091782755289138502014-06-01T17:05:47.132-04:002014-06-01T17:05:47.132-04:00The Film Connoisseur:

Thanks for the tip on that!

George:

That's awesome! Yeah I love watching this film as well. It takes me back to a simpler time.

And yep, the director is Sanaa Lathan's dad. The beginning scene was even filmed in my neighborhood in Queens when Ramon spots the train on the elevated line. Rae Dawn Chong is sexy as hell, and I really wish they would release a special edition with all the cut scenes. What a fun, forgotten little movie. Isn't the director Sanaa Lathan's dad?Georgenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5407391624985829089.post-23948209668804809542012-09-21T16:03:48.255-04:002012-09-21T16:03:48.255-04:00Thanks a whole lot for this review, for all the lo...Thanks a whole lot for this review, for all the love I have for New York City, I've never seen this movie. I've seen Breakin and Breakin 2 Electric Boogaloo, and I've seen Fame, but I've yet to experience this slice of NYC lovin'. I will be correcting this mistake very soon, I MUST see this film as soon as possible, it seems like I will enjoy it inmensely, considering I lived in NYC (The Bronx!) during the time this film was made, so it will certainly bring back some memories.

If you would like to see a documentary that captures this era, but focuses more on the grafitti side of things, I wholeheartedly recommend watching Style Wars! It follows a group of young kids who do most of their grafitti on the New York trains, very interesting, very colorful, and the lives of those kids, such an interesting cultural insight. Thanks again for reminding me I need to see this one, when I lived in NY, people used to break dance on the streets, it was an awesome time, gone but not forgotten. Characters may look cartoony in some of these films, but honestly, people were more fun back then somehow. Franco Macabrohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10994905312221715861noreply@blogger.com
